According to ayurveda, red lentils are tridoshic, i.e. suitable for all three constitutional types of vata, pitta and kapha and their combined types.
If eaten with a little oil or clarified butter (ghee), its astringent taste is softened, which can slightly increase vata.
Diet for Meditation
Its other properties - sweet taste, cooling effect, lightness and softness are considered sattvic - harmonize the body, calm the mind and bring more light into the body. It is therefore recommended as a suitable food for the practice of yoga and meditation.
Red lentils also promote blood formation,cleanse the liver and are a good source of iron. It consists mainly of carbohydrates, protein and fibre and also contains vitamin B and magnesium.
Simple Recipe for Red Lentil Hummus
Ingredients:
1 cup red lentils
1/2 cup tahini (sesame paste)
2 tablespoons ghee (clarified butter)
1 tablespoon full-fat mustard
1 teaspoon Himalayan salt
1 teaspoon garam masala spice
Preparation:
Rinse the red lentils several times with cold water and remove the haze and foam. Then boil until soft in water and after boiling let the rest of the water boil or drain. After cooling, add the other ingredients and blend to a fine spread.
